"Looking For" Phrases of the Week


The verb "chercher" (shehr shay) -to look for

Je cherche (zhuh shehrsh) - I am looking for...
je ne cherche pas (zhuh neh shehrsh pah) -I am not looking for...

tu cherches (too shersh) -you are looking for...     (use when speaking to a friend or family member)
tu ne cherches pas (too neh shehrsh pah) -you are not looking for...      (use when speaking to a friend or family member)

il/elle cherche (eel/ell shehrsh) -he/she is looking for...
il/elle ne cherche pas (eel/ell neh shehrsh pah) -he/she is not looking for

nous cherchons (noo shehr shohn) -We are looking for...
nous ne cherchons pas (noo neh shehr shohn pah) -we are not looking for...

vous cherchez (voo shehr shay) -you are looking for....    (when speaking to someone you do not know well)
vous ne cherchez pas (voo neh shehr shay pah) -you are not looking for...

ils cherchent (eel shehrsh) They are looking for....   (when talking about all males or a mixed group)
elles cherchent (ell shehrsh) They are looking for....   (when talking about a group of females only)

ils ne cherchent pas (eel neh shehrsh pah) They are not looking for....   (when talking about all males or a mixed group)
elles neh cherchent pas (ell neh shehrsh pah) They are not looking for....   (when talking about a group of females only)

examples to use with this verb:
un restaurant (uh rehst oh rahnt) -a restaurant
un livre (uhn lee vruh) - a book
les toilettes (lay twah leht) -the restrooms
mon  portefeuille (mohn pore teh foo eel) -my wallet
ma montre (mah mahn truh) -my watch
