I have to admit, even though I am a bit of a geek, and love technology and gadgets. But I do still like to read a good book every now and then. But I find a lot of modern literature unoriginal. How many times can you read a novel involving serial killers, or courtroom dramas written by ex-lawyers, or medical fiction involving a spreading fatal disease? I have been finding myself turning to a lot of books I used to have to read back in high school (and cringed at having to have read), but now finding out how really good they were. Which leads us to this postings must read book. "A Tale Of Two Cities" is a thrilling story, that if written today, would probably be a T.V. show (hopefully a PBS production), because it was written by Dickens as installments when first published. The major part of the story concerns the French Revolution, which it is why a british author's novel is included on this site. This is one of the best novels ever written.
For those of you who have bought a Kindle or a Nook recently, this is one of those great free out of copyright books you can download.

No not the Disney version (although I do like that one too). This is the 1946 french version that I had first seen while going to Art école back in the 70's. A great piece of cinema, that is studied by film classes all over the world. The film is notable for its surreal quality and its ability to use existing movie technology to effectively evoke a feeling of magie and enchantment. The set designs and cinematography were intended to evoke the illustrations and engravings of Gustave Doré and, in the farmhouse scenes, the paintings of Jan Vermeer.
Based on a French fairy tale that was first published in 1740.
Beauty and the Beast (French: La Belle et la Bête) is a 1946 French romantic fantasy film adaptation of Jeanne-Marie Le Prince de Beaumont's fairy tale. Directed by French poet/filmmaker Jean Cocteau, the film stars Josette Day as Belle and Jean Marais as both Avenant and The Beast. The plot revolves around Belle's père who is sentenced to death for picking a rose from Beast's garden. Belle offers to go back to the Beast in her father's place. Beast falls in love with her and proposes marriage on a nightly basis which she refuses. Belle eventually becomes more drawn to Beast, who tests her by letting her return home to her family telling her that if she doesn't return to him within a week, he will die of grief.

The Return of Martin Guerre (Le Retour de Martin Guerre) is a 1982 French film directed by Daniel Vigne and based on historical events in France during the 16th century. The Return of Martin Guerre is set in France during the Hundred Years' War. Imagining herself a widow, Nathalie Baye is astonished when her husband Gerard Depardieu returns after nine years. He looks like her mari and sounds like her mari, and certainly has a working knowledge of the couple's prior relationship. Still, neither Baye nor her neighbors can shake the notion that Depardieu is an imposter--especially since he's a much nicer and more responsible person than the man who marched off to war so long ago. Matters come to a head when the local magistrate sentencesDepardieu to hang for his own murder.
